TRAVEL TIPS
GENERAL
 |
Always carry on your person when departing on a Flight:
Any medications you are on
Your Airline Tickets
All travel vouchers you have
Insurance Papers and Contact Numbers
Proof of Citizenship ( now it is best to travel with a passport)
Make duplicate copies of your passport, insurance, Itinerary and have in each suitcase.
|
Get to know the Culture:
| Read up on your destination. If a 3rd world country, you might want to bring books for the children of that country. When I went to Russia, I took small gift bars of soap, shampoos, etc. (they were very well received. You can get various books from your local library or go "Chapters" book store |
 |
DO NOT TAKE FOOD FROM STRANGERS
 |
This old warning is true, even in foreign countries. One traveler said local passengers on a train were offered food and drink sometimes tainted with sleeping drugs. (There goes your luggage, etc.)
|
MONEY, PASSPORTS, VISA?S, CREDIT CARDS
Always keep your money and passport close to your body.
Always keep a copy of your passport, credit cards, etc left at home with someone, as well as a letter of authorization to cancel credit cards (Important if you cannot get through to the credit card companies or bank)
Always keep a copy of passport, traveler cheques numbers in a separate suitcase.
Do not always count on being able to use your Bank Card....the country may have lots of locations, but if you are on a bus trip, off the cruise ship for the day...You do not want to be trying to find a Bank Machine..You want to see the place you are visiting.
I find the best way is to take extra Traveler?s cheques. Some Cash and of course the Credit Card.
|
 |
Remember in some 3rd world countries, you will have to have the currency of that country, as the small little shops or markets do not have Credit Card access.
Most Major Hotels in 3rd world countries will have a currency exchange counter.
I always take at least a couple hundred dollars converted into currency of destination.
|
 |
HEALTH SUPPLIES:
 |
Remember in a lot of places you will be traveling a "Drug Store" is not around the corner. I always bring:
Aspirin or Tylenol
Pepto Bismol
Extra Kleenex
Cold Medication (I usually bring a pill form)
Women?s Hygiene Products
Your regular supply of Medications and non-prescription drugs
Antiseptic cleanser
I always take my own hypodermic needle as some areas administer shots with used needles. This is one item I hope I never have to use.
|
MONTEZUMA REVENGE:
To avoid it: Especially 3rd world countries and Mexico
Drink only bottled water wherever you travel.
Go easy on the booze the first few days
Do not eat uncooked veggies for a few days
Take 4 to 8 tablespoons of Pepto Bismol daily
DO NOT BRUSH YOUR TEETH OR GARGLE WITH TAP WATER
|
 |
|
If you get it:
|
|
Drink lots of Coca-Cola with fresh lime.
Rest. You will have to stay close to your room anyway.
Avoid solid foods for at least 24 hours. Continue taking Pepto Bismol.
If you are not well after 36 hours, see a local doctor. (this is why we have insurance)
|
|
CLEARING CUSTOMS:
 |
It is a good idea to keep a list & receipts of items that you have bought out of your country.
Remember that Customs officials are only doing their jobs. Every Country has different rules and regulations. Please respect the differences.
Always be polite and respectful of the Customs Officials.
Never lie to Customs Officials (you dont want to land up in the "Hooskow" if found out.) Some countries are not as lenient as Canada and the United States.
|
|
PACKING HINTS:
 |
I have been traveling for a number of years and am still learning:
Roll your clothes, this way your clothes arrive not as wrinkled
Pack into the toes of your shoes, small items like, socks, underwear, etc.
|
CLOTHES:
What should I wear on the ship? Day time is always casual throughout the ship. If a warm climate wear what you would at home on a hot day.
Evening would recommend:
Casual Nights - open neck shirts, slacks and leisure wear fit right in.
Semi-Formal - ladies wear dresses, or pantsuits and men wear coats and ties.
Formal- ladies deck themselves out in evening gowns or cocktail dresses, and men wear tuxedos, dinner jackets or dark suits.
I ALWAYS TELL PEOPLE .." DONT GO AND SPEND A FORTUNE ON NEW CLOTHES THAT YOU WOULD NOT WEAR AT HOME"
I have been traveling for years and still take too much, so good luck.
I now try to take just a few pair of slacks and different blouses or tops to wear with them, and the same with shorts. With Mix & Matching you can really cut down on your wardrobe.
Comfortable walking shoes are a must;
|
 |
SEASICKNESS:
 |
Modern ships have "Stabilizers" and you won't feel the ship move.
But there are a few good products on the Market. Wrist-bands for one- you can buy at any drug store.
Go see your Doctor and get a perscrption for patches behind your ear, or some sea sickness pills.
